Profile

Home aims to work for the total development of the mentally challenged persons. It does so by acquiring and disseminating information on the mentally challenged. It undertakes researches to chalk out methods of normalization and promote awareness of this problem. Also the needs of the afflicted is to be communicated among parents, families and the general public.

In order to organize and provide mentally challenged persons rehabilitation oriented pre-school and school education, vocationally and physically based training, employment opportunities, amendment of obstructive laws or codification of new legislation, the Home is closely cooperating with government institutions, companies, individuals, local and municipal bodies, indigenous partners and non governmental organizations.

The Home is very nicely situated on more than 18 hectares of land (45 acres) in the Belgrade suburb of Sremcica. In addition, Home has a sports facility, a playground for the children as well as a special facility for physiotherapy. One more additional aspect of the work and recreation for its protégées, is a camp facility on the Montenegrin Coast, where the children and residents have the opportunity to get away from the daily routines and have a summer holiday. For the winter season Home has a camp (50 beds) on the Kosmaj mountain near Belgrade.

All together there are about 300 young people and children in the Home; 50 of whom are in the 25 to 50 age bracket. This group is generally well socialized; each one of them having experienced the various phases of growing up at the Home. They have also been a great source of work to help keep the Home running. There is no other suitable center in this country for these older handicapped people.

More than half of the children come from Belgrade and the surrounding area. The remaining ones are from all parts of Serbia. About 30 are refugees from the area of Kosovo and Metohija. About one third of these refugees have contact with their family and the rest are there without parents as a result of the recent war. The parenting functions are in these cases filled by the Home staff.
