People in Need is a Czech nonprofit, non-governmental organization that has implement relief and development projects in crisis
regions around the globe and has supported human rights and democracy in countries repressed by totalitarian regimes over its twelve-year history.
In the Czech Republic, People in Need has worked to foster tolerance and respect for others, while raising the awareness of the
situation of individuals suffering from the effects of war, long-term poverty or oppressive regimes.
Founded in 1992, People in Need began to distribute supplies and to assist in reconstruction in some of the most dangerous and needy
areas of the world. Over the past thirteen years, People in Need has administered over 50 million USD in thirty-three countries world wide.
In recognition of its achievements, People in Need received the Czech Foreign Ministry's Gratias Agit Award in 1997 for outstanding contributions
to the Czech Republic's image abroad. In 1998 the United States and the European Union granted the Democracy and Civil Society Award to People in Need,
in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Marshall Plan.
The main goals of People in Need's operation in these war-torn areas are to distribute food and medicine, to rebuild schools and medical facilities
and to provide general support. People in Need is a multi-year implementing partner with, among others, UNHCR, UNICEF, the World Food Program, and the
International Organization for Migration (IOM).
